In this year’s elections, one of the main issues that candidates are expected to provide an answer to is on the subject of healthcare. Excerpts from the upcoming memoir by former President Barack Obama reveals the political battle that ensued behind the scenes that led to the passing of the Affordable Care Act.
One of the highlights from the eight-year-tenure of Obama as president was the passing and signing of the Affordable Care Act, guaranteeing protection especially for those with preexisting conditions. Excerpts of the former president’s upcoming memoir, titled “A Promised Land,” have been released online and some of it reveals what occurred behind the scenes at the Obama White House when it came to battling racism during his candidacy, the H1N1 pandemic, and the healthcare act.
One moment detailed that in the mission to win over Republican support while keeping the Democrats in agreement. Obama wrote that to pass the bill, he needed the then-Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to get every Democrat to vote yes and that 60 votes were needed. In their attempt to secure Democrat votes, it also resulted in deals with centrists which ultimately eliminated the public option, and in doing so, Obama was criticized by the left.
“‘What is it about 60 votes these folks don’t understand?’ I groused to my staff,” wrote the former president. Obama was eventually advised by Reid to stay out of the hopes of getting 60 votes, saying that while the then-president knew a lot about healthcare law, ‘But I know the Senate, OK?’” said Reid.
Meanwhile, the former president is actively on the campaign trail as of late to further make the case for his former colleague, Joe Biden who is challenging Donald Trump in the elections. In his recent campaign event in Orlando, Florida, Obama blasted Trump again, accusing him of turning the White House into a hot spot for COVID-19, following reports of many officials testing positive.
“More than 225,000 people in this country are dead,” said Obama during the event. “More than 100,000 small businesses have closed. Half a million jobs are gone in Florida alone, think about that. And what’s his closing argument? That people are too focused on Covid. He said this at one of his rallies. Covid, Covid, Covid, he’s complaining. He’s jealous of Covid’s media coverage.”
